A Green Sea Turtle’s shell in full-blown technicolour. The top side of the shell is called the carapace, and in much the same way as a human’s spine and vertebrae work, the carapace protects the turtle’s spinal cord and central nervous system. The shell is made up of hard layers of keratin, like human nails and hair, which shed over time to allow the turtles to grow to great sizes - reaching over one metre in length.
