Gravity's Rainbow

Gravity's Rainbow

from A$55.00

Portrait of one of my favourite animals in the world, the Peacock Mantis Shrimp (or Rainbow Mantis Shrimp). I could talk for hours about this animal, but will leave you with just one incredible fact about their eyes.

Humans have three colour-receptive cones that enable us to observe all the colours of the rainbow. That’s a lot of colour, but we are dwarfed in comparison to the Mantis Shrimp’s 16 colour-receptive cones!

As humans cannot see the other 13 colours, it is impossible for us to imagine what they look like, however the Mantis Shrimps can likely see any/all of the following wavelengths of light; gamma, x-ray, ultra-violet, infra-red, microwaves and even radio waves.

It is no wonder that they are so beautiful to observe… that is, based on the colours that I can see.
