This Bobtail Squid (or Dumpling Squid) is capable of harvesting bioluminescent bacteria, which inhabit a special organ inside the squid’s mantle. This enables the squid to hide its’ silhouette when viewed from below by matching the amount of light hitting the top of the mantle. This camouflage method is also known as “counter-illumination”.
