Ecological Oasis

Ecological Oasis

from A$55.00

Coral reefs are a beautiful, living, network of incredible complexity. They are some of the most biologically diverse habitats on the planet, and support more species per unit than any other marine environment.

Vast biomes such as the Great Barrier Reef (captured here) also protect shorelines by absorbing energy from waves, storms, and floods, which help to prevent loss of human life, property damage, and coastal erosion.

Unfortunately, despite their great ecological significance and economic value, coral reefs across the globe are diminishing at an alarming rate due to destructive human activities. They are threatened by a toxic combination of rising ocean temperatures, acidification, overfishing, pollution, offshore drilling, fracking, oil spills, agricultural runoff, and habitat destruction from coastal developments.

Shark fishing, finning, culling, shark nets, and trophy hunting, all further damage the Ocean’s natural balance. A direct consequence of these activities is that by removing all of the keystone predators, it is likely to lead to a total ecosystem collapse, whereby ‘top-down regulation’ of the food web ceases to exist.

Studies suggest that over 50% of the Oceans’ coral reefs have died within the past 30 years. And although this might sound absurd, it is possible that my own life expectancy is now higher than that of the Great Barrier Reef.
