This is a Southern Calamari Squid, sporting its famously vibrant, aperiodic skin pattern. Each individual has unique colourations and markings, and will sometimes join me during night dives throughout the summer months, as they enjoy hunting in the torch lights.

When resurfacing from local shore dives, I am often asked by fishermen whether I have seen Calamari, or the slightly smaller Luminous Bay Squid in the area. It can be very upsetting to be confronted with this question so regularly, and so immediately, after sharing the water with these highly intelligent animals.

Cephalopods (including the Southern Calamari Squid) were recently added to the Sentience Bill (2021), however, no additional protections have been put in place to regulate fishing practices.
