Sentient Glow

Sentient Glow

from A$55.00

A Sarasvati Shrimp contemplates the mysteries of the universe.

Crustaceans, including crabs and shrimps, have recently been accepted as demonstrating ‘sentience’, a term which recognises them to be capable of feeling pain, anger, fear, happiness, as well as more complex social intelligence such as having individual personalities and forming long term acquaintances.

The term ‘sentient’ has huge implications for global policy making, as it confronts a multi-billion dollar crustacean trade, which has long benefited from the theory that these animals do not feel pain. For example, while it is still possible (for now) to hand-pick live export in restaurants to be boiled alive, practices such as this are increasingly shrouded by the weight of the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act, as well as increasing social awareness.
