Unlikely Haven

Unlikely Haven
This yellow Whip Coral is about 1cm in diameter and is often seen wafting in the ocean currents, attached only at its base to the sea floor. But if you look closely, the coral is also inhabited by a yellow Whip Coral Shrimp (Pontonides Unciger).
Where something seemingly inane is able to grow, there is always a symbiotic benefactor lurking nearby. This is one of the reasons I love macro photography, and why I will always look under every leaf and rock in the Ocean when I’m diving.
The main threats to this Coral (and Shrimp) are fishing practices that trawl and destroy the corals. In popular dive sites, they can also be damaged by divers who do not realise what they are brushing into.
