Cornetfish (or Flutemouth) are very common in Sydney waters, but I can count on one finger the amount of times I have had a shoal of them all bumping up against my lens and dive lights in the midwater. I’m still not really sure what all the commotion was about…

I find Cornetfish particularly difficult to photograph for a number of reasons; they are demersal so the background is often sandy, they are not typically inquisitive towards humans so will often face away from the camera, their eyes are in a strange place to use as the focal point, and they are (in my opinion) a rather unphotogenic shape. So with all of that said, I’m pretty happy with how this one turned out!
